Overview

This article will cover how an education institution can waive Courses for its students.

Use case

A student who is taking a Bachelor of Business Information System, has sufficient knowledge (i.e. previous studies, practical experience) in a particular area, i.e. marketing.

Hence, the student is requesting to skip the Course 'Introduction to Marketing', and take another different Course as a replacement instead.

The results for the skipped Course should not affect the overall grades for the Program.

The admin can waive the student's Course by setting the Grade Result as 'Waiver' on the related Course Connection.

The checkboxes 'Release Grades', 'Ignore for GPA calculation', and 'Ignore Credits Earned' will need to be checked as well. This will ensure that the overall results or GPA for that Program will not be affected by skipping this Course with 0 earned credits.

Note that waiving a Course means the student will not gain any Credits Earned or GPA contribution from it.

Unlike Credit Transfer or RPL (recognition of prior learning), waived Courses will not count towards the GPA, and the student will need to earn credits from another different Course to meet the required credits for the Program.

Waiving a pre-requisite Course

Consider a scenario where the Course that is to be waived, is also a pre-requisite Course.

For example, the 'Introduction to Marketing' is required to be completed in order to take 'Advanced Marketing' Course. Since it is waived and the student will not be taking the first Course, how will this affect the next Course?

In addition to setting Grade Results to 'Waiver', and checking 'Release Grades', 'Ignore for GPA calculation', and 'Ignore Credits Earned', the admin will also need to check the 'Requirement Met' checkbox for the waived Course Connection.

Once this is waived, the 'Requirement Met' checkbox on the other Course Connection (i.e. 'Advanced Marketing') will also be checked. This means that the student can proceed to enroll to that Course, even though the pre-requisite Course has been waived.
