RIO Challenge C07.1 - Retake a Failed Course
If a student fails a Course, it can sometimes be a stressful experience.
RIO Education gives students the ability to re-enroll in a failed Course in an upcoming Term as soon as their grades are released.
When students continue on and pass the Course, by default only their best result will contribute to their Grade Point Average (GPA).
This promotes a positive student experience by allowing students' momentum to continue as they work toward completing their program of study.
Learning outcomes
Challenger understands how:
- Students can retake a failed Course.
- The GPA is subsequently calculated when the student attempts the Course more than once.
What does success look like?
- The Challenger has released course grades, resulting in a student failing a course.
- The student is able to re-enroll in the failed course and subsequently passes the course. Only their best (passing) grade is used in the calculation of the student's (GPA).

Follow the steps below to login to the Student Community as Fred Smith, and enroll to that Course again.
- From the Program Enrollment record, click the link to the contact record 'C07.1 - Fred Smith'.
Then, log in to the Experience as user. - This will take you to the Student Community, which is the front-end portal that students will be interacting with.
Click on 'Programs' at the bottom of the page, then click on 'my Pathway' on the next page.
Select 'T3 C07.1 - Future Term 1', and enroll to BUS203.
Although Fred Smith has taken this Course in the previous Term, he is still able to view and enroll to the same Course during the next Term.
This is because RIO Education will allow a failed Course to be re-selected from the enrollment wizard, while a passed Course will not appear in the wizard.
Hint: You will need to toggle 'View All Courses' to see BUS203.
-
Log out from the Student Community and you will be redirected back to the student record in the admin console.
- Assume Fred Smith gets a better grade and passes BUS203 during his second attempt.
This time, navigate to the new Course Connection for BUS203, which has been automatically cloned when Fred Smith failed the original BUS203 Course Connection.
This new cloned Course Connection for BUS203 will be enrolled in Future Term 1 (as a reattempt).
Hint: Refer back to Step 3 for instructions on how to navigate to the Course Connection and release the grades.
From the Details tab, update the record with the following missing information and click 'Save'.Grade

- Fred Smith has now passed his reattempt.
But what about his original Course Connection (that he failed)? Will that 'drag' down his GPA?
To find out, navigate back to the original failed Course Connection record for BUS 203.
The 'Ignore for GPA Calculation' checkbox is checked automatically. Why?
This is because by default, the system will include only the BEST course result in the GPA calculation, thereby ignoring the results obtained during the 1st 'Failed' attempt.
If the student attempts the Course multiple times, only the best result will contribute towards GPA calculation.
Thus, Fred Smith's first (original) Course Connection will be ignored, since his reattempt has a better result.
- Congratulations, you have completed the challenge! Click on the 'RIO Challenge V2' tab at the bottom left of the page, and click on 'Complete Challenge'.
