RIO Challenge v4 - C07.02 - Competency Grading
A ‘Pass/Fail’ Grade Setting Type, as its name suggests, is a method of grading students such that they either passed or failed a Study Unit (course).
In this setting, grades are released as either ‘Competent’ or ‘Incompetent’. This approach is often used in vocational education, professional certifications, and short courses.
Follow this exercise to see how the Study Grade Schemes are set up for an Undergraduate Competency Program and release a grade based on Pass/Fail.
Learning outcomes
- Learn how to set up a grading scheme for an Undergraduate Competency Program and override a study grade setting in study offering level.
What does success look like?
- Able to set up a grading scheme for an Undergraduate Competency and released grades based on this setting.
Estimated time to complete
15 minutes.
Steps to complete the challenge
Recently, they've decided to implement a new grading system for some Study Units starting this Term.
With this new system, students will be graded as either ‘Competent’ or ‘Incompetent’.
In other words, students either pass or fail the Study Unit.
| Numerical Grade Lower Range | Numerical Grade Higher Range | Letter Grade | Grade Points | Grade Result |
| 41 | 100 | Competent | 4 | Pass |
| 0 | 40.9 | Incompetent | 0 | Fail |
This new Study Grade Setting will be used for the current Term onwards.
Study Offerings from previous Terms will continue to use the original Study Grade Setting.

As an Assessment Officer, complete the exercise below to set this up and grade the students.
- Click on the 'RIO Challenge v4' tab at the bottom left of the page. Click on 'Initiate Challenge' to generate the data required for this challenge.
- Go to the ‘Accounts’ tab, and select the list view ‘C07.02 - Competency Grading’ to find the relevant record created for this challenge.
- Open the Educational Institution record and navigate to the ‘Grade Settings’ tab.
Open the ‘C07.02 - Undergraduate Competency' Study Grading Setting record.
- Once you are inside Study Grade Setting ‘C07-02 - Undergraduate Competency’ look for the ‘Configuration’ tab, you can see that the Study Grading Scheme has been created to define what constitutes as “Competent”.
Any score between 41 - 100 counts as “Competent”.
However, there is no Study Grading Scheme to define what counts as “Incompetent”.
Thus, create a new Study Grade Scheme for Letter grade Incompetent with the set up following details.
| Study Grading Scheme Name | C07.02 - Undergraduate Incompetent |
| Study Grade Setting | C07.02 - Undergraduate Competency |
| Numerical Grade Lower Range | 0.00 |
| Numerical Grade Higher Range | 40.90 |
| Letter Grade | Incompetent |
| Grade Points | 0.00 |
| Letter Grade Scoring Range | Lower Range |
| Grade Results | Fail |
| Exclude Credits Earned | No |
| Exclude GPA Calculation | No |
- Now, we need to make sure that the Study Unit (e.g. course) will be referring to this new setting.
This is to ensure that when grades are released, the results can be calculated based on this new setting.
Go to the ‘Study Units’ tab, and select the list view ‘C07.02 - Competency Grading’ to find the relevant unit record.
Open the Study Unit record ‘C07.02 - AC104 - Advanced Composition Studies’ .
Notice that the “Study Grade Setting” is already defined.
However, this is the “old” Study Grade Setting.
Remember that from the current Term onwards, we want to use the new Study Grade Setting that we created in step 4.
NOTE:
Normally RIO Education does not show the Study Grade Setting field as this is considered as a more advanced feature that should not be modified by the user without the full understanding of it's function and effect. For the purpose of this Challenge however we have made the field visible, but in the normal instance with RIO Education the System Administrator will need to bring the field out into the layout to see them.
- While still viewing the Study Unit record, go to the ‘Offerings' tab.
Each Study Offering represents a particular Term in which a Study Unit is offered to students.
Open the Study Offering ‘C07.02 - Current Term - AC104 - Advanced Composition Studies’ .
Then, update this field on the Study Offering record.
| Study Grade Setting | C07.02 - Undergraduate Competency |
- You have now defined that Study Units running in the current Term will be referring to the new Study Grading Setting that uses ‘Competency / Incompetency’.
Let's see how this will look during grade release.
Go to the ‘Individual Program Enrollments’ tab and select the list view ‘C07.02 - Competency Grading’ .
Open the Individual Program Enrollment record belonging to ‘C07.02 - Fred Smith’.
- An Individual Program Enrollment record keeps track of a student's program enrollment and their progress.
Navigate to the ‘Program Completion’ tab.
The program completion tab shows the overall progress of the enrolled program with other details such as Enrollment Status, Credits Earned, Completion Progress, and so on.
- Click on C07.02 - Foundation Core in the Program Completion panel to expand it and show the Individual Plan Structure records within. Notice that under the C07.02 - Foundation Core the student has already enrolled into “Advanced Composition Studies”.
(You may need to hover the mouse over the Study Unit link in order to see the full name of the Study Unit involved)
This was the Study Unit we saw earlier in step 5.
Open the Individual Plan Structure (IPS) record for the Study Unit ‘AC104 - Advanced Composition Studies’.
- The Individual Plan Structure tracks the credits earned from completed Study Units and contributes them to the overall program completion.
From the ‘Completion Info’ section, click the Individual Enrollment record.
- The Individual Enrollment is a record of the student's enrollment into a Study Offering.
In this scenario, this student has enrolled in ‘C07.02 - Current Term - AC104’.
Update the following fields and save the record to release the grades.
For this unit, let's use numerical grades and see the changes.
| Grade Release Status | Released |
| Numerical Grade | 38 |
- Upon releasing the grades, the following details will be automatically calculated.
Remember earlier in step 6 that we have defined that this current Term's Study Offerings will be using the new “Competency” Study Grade Settings.
Therefore, the results are now based on the new “Competency” Study Grade Settings.
Since this student has scored 38, it counts as “Incompetent” and a “Fail” grade result.
- You can also directly input the ‘Competent’ or ‘Incompetent’ grade itself.
Let's release the grade for another unit ‘C07.02 - CE104’ .
- Return to the Individual Program Enrollments tab and select the list view “C07.02 - Competency Grading”.

Open the same Individual Program Enrollment record, and click on the “Program Completion” tab.
This time, click to open the Individual Plan Structure record for the Study Unit “Ethics in Action: Foundations of Applied Ethics” which can be found under the same C07.02 - Foundation Core as the one we saw before. Once again you may need to hover on the Study Unit of the various IPS listed under C07.02 - Foundation Core to find the right IPS record.
While viewing the Individual Plan Structure record, scroll down to the “Completion Info” section.
Then, click on the "Individual Enrollment” field to open the Individual Enrollment record.
- You are now viewing the Individual Enrollment record for “Ethics in Action: Foundations of Applied Ethics”.
Let's release the grades for this Individual Enrollment.
Update the following fields and save the record.
| Grade Release Status | Released |
| Letter Grade | Competent |
- Upon releasing the grade, the following details will be automatically calculated.
Since this student is given a “Competent” Letter Grade, this results in a “Pass” and credits earned.
- Return to the Individual Program Enrollment and check the Program Completion tab to view the result.
Refresh the record if you don't see any changes.
The first Individual Enrollment from step 12 was marked as “Incompetent”, thus leading to a “Fail” grade result.
The second Individual Enrollment from step 16 was marked as “Competent”, thus leading to a “Pass” grade result.
The credits earned have been added to the Completion Progress.
- Congratulations, you have completed the challenge! Click on the 'RIO Challenge v4' tab at the bottom left of the page, and click on 'Complete Challenge'.
