RIO Challenge v4 - C07.10 - Grading Sequence

Institutions typically organize study programs into different groups, each containing multiple units with varying credit requirements.

The following shows a sample Study Program Plan, where students are required to complete at least

  • 4 credits from Group A
  • 12 credits from Group B

However, in some cases, a study plan might include ‘double-dipped’ units, where the same unit exists in multiple groups. In this challenge, we will explore a ‘double-dipped’ scenario and learn how to address it using simple sequence configurations.

Learning outcomes

  1. Grasp the concept of a ‘double-dipped’ unit scenario.
  2. Understand the use of ‘Sequence’ in the study plan structure group.
  3. Learn how credits are allocated when the first group in the sequence has already fulfilled its credit requirement.

What does success look like?

  1. Able to set up sequences in different study plan structure groups and release grades.

Estimated time to complete

20 minutes

Steps to complete the challenge

RIO University has organized a study program plan into several groups, each containing multiple units. In this challenge, we will explore a scenario where an ‘Undergraduate Program’ includes the same units in two different groups.

In this study plan structure, notice that both groups have two common units which might cause an issue if we do not address which group is prioritized to take the completed credits for DI205 and AC104 units. By default, the system will prioritize the group using the lowest group Individual Plan Structure Number. Thus, to have better control over the credit contributions, it is always recommended to set up sequence numbers for each study plan structure group.

Additionally, we will explore a situation where the credit requirement for the first group in the sequence has already been fulfilled.

  1.  Click on the ‘RIO Challenge v4’ tab at the bottom left of the page. Click on ‘Initiate Challenge’ to generate the data required for this challenge.

  2. Go to the ‘Study Programs’ tab, and select the list view ‘C07.10 - Grading Sequence’ to find the relevant record for this challenge.

  3. Open the record, and from the ‘Versions’ tab, open the ‘C07.10 - RIO Undergraduate Program Plan’ record.

  4. Navigate to the ‘Configurations’ tab, and open the record for the study plan structure mentioned in the table below, and update the sequence number accordingly.

Study Plan Structure Name Sequence
C07.10 - Experiential Learning Courses 1
C07.10 - Foundation Core  2

  1. Go to the ‘Individual Program Enrollments’ tab, and select the list view ‘C07.10 - Grading Sequence’ to find the relevant record for this challenge.

  2. Open the ‘C07.10 - Fred Smith’ IPE record and navigate to the ‘Program Completion’ tab. Notice that, there are two same units already enrolled under two different groups.

  3. Let's first release the grade for unit ‘C07.10 - DI205’. Open the IPS record and from the completion info section, open the IE and update the following fields. Note: Please make sure you release grade for 'C07.10 - DI205’ first.
Grade Release Status Released
Letter Grade A

  1. Return to the previous IPE, and check the program completion tab. Notice that the credit is contributed to the ‘Experiential Learning Courses’ group as it was set as sequence 1. The ‘Completion Progress’ for the group is 100% as the credit required for the group is equal to the credits earned.

  2. Now, let's release the grade for unit ‘C07.10 - AC104’ by following the same steps as before and updating the following fields in the Individual Enrollment.

Grade Release Status Released
Letter Grade A

  1. Return to the previous IPE, and check the program completion tab. Notice that, this time credit is contributed to the ‘Foundation Core’ group even though we have set the ‘Experiential Learning Courses’ group as sequence 1.

  2. Therefore, by setting up sequences in the study plan structure group, you can fully control credit allocation and effectively manage double-dipping situations.

  3. Congratulations, you have completed the challenge! Click on the 'RIO Challenge v4' tab at the bottom left of the page, and click on 'Complete Challenge'.
